Belek and the city

Antalya

A walled harbour town at the foot of the mountains, and the city you come back to after a day on the courses.

Antalya is Turkey's principal Mediterranean resort: shady palm boulevards, a prize-winning marina and a long season of clear light. The old quarter, Kaleiçi, keeps the narrow streets and wooden houses that grew up against the ancient walls. Belek, where the golf is played, lies a short drive east along the same coast.

Kaleiçi

Attalos II of Pergamon founded the city in the second century B.C. and named it Attaleia. Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans followed. Kaleiçi is still that sequence in one walk: the harbour, the walls and the houses between them.

Yivli Minare

The fluted minaret raised by Alaeddin Keykubad in the 13th century is the mark of the city. Close by are the Karatay Medrese, the tiled Murat Paşa Mosque, the İskele Mosque over a spring, Hıdırlık Tower and the Kesik Minare.

Hadrian's Gate

When Hadrian visited in 130 A.D. a three-arched marble gate was built into the walls. It is the last of the old city gates still standing, with the towers and a stretch of wall beside the marina.

Aspendos

A short drive east, the Roman theatre built in the 2nd century is the best-preserved stage in the region. It still holds opera, concerts and part of the Golden Orange Film Festival each autumn.

The bay, then Belek

Konyaaltı runs along the western shore, the Beydağları behind the bay. East of the centre the coast opens through Lara to Belek, where pine, sand and the golf courses sit together. The Kaleiçi marina is the evening stop. The Archaeological Museum, closed on Mondays, holds the finds from Perge and Aspendos.

A mild winter

The same season that keeps the courses open makes the old town and Aspendos easy to add to a round.
